Man Charged with Fatal Attack on Bicyclist in Dana Point

A man from Long Beach has been charged with murder following the death of a cyclist in Santa Ana. Vanroy Evan Smith, 39, is also facing a sentence enhancement for using a deadly weapon during the crime.

The victim, Dr. Michael John Mammone, aged 58, was killed on Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Crown Valley Parkway. According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Smith allegedly hit Mammone, who was riding a bicycle, from behind before getting out of his vehicle and stabbing him. Bystanders managed to detain Smith until the authorities arrived.

Investigations have revealed that there was no known connection between the two men. If found guilty, Smith could face up to 26 years to life in prison.
