LA Metro and other transit agencies in Southern California will offer free rides this Saturday to celebrate the 6th annual Transit Equity Day, honoring civil rights icon Rosa Parks. Metrolink and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority will also be participating in providing free fares. Metro's bus, rail, and bike-share services will be free, and a 30-minute free ride can be redeemed on Metro Bike Share using code 020423.
L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, who also serves on the Metro board, stated that Transit Equity Day serves as a reminder of transit's past with racism and classism and what the agency should strive to be: safe, clean, reliable, and affordable for all. Ara Najarian, Chair of the Metro board, said that the goal is to make transit more accessible and affordable for disadvantaged riders, in the spirit of Rosa Parks' legacy.
