On March 28, 2023, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to an incident in the 100 block of S. Michillinda Avenue. According to reports, a male suspect posed as a utility worker and knocked on a resident's door, intending to access their backyard and distract the homeowner. It is suspected that a second suspect may have been involved.
This type of scam is unfortunately common and can pose a serious threat to homes and small businesses. Scammers often pretend to be utility workers to charge for fake services, sell unnecessary products, collect personal information, or gain access to steal valuables. In some cases, perpetrators have been known to act aggressively towards victims.
To ensure your safety, the Sierra Madre Police Department recommends that you refrain from answering the door if you don't recognize the person on the other side. Always verify their identity by contacting the company they claim to represent and be cautious of anyone attempting to lure you out of your home. If you are unsure about a utility worker or contractor knocking on your door, please call 9-1-1 or the non-emergency Police Department line at 626-355-1414.
If you have any information about this incident, please contact our Detective's Division or leave information anonymously on Crime Stoppers at https://lacrimestoppers.org.
