South Pasadena Among San Gabriel Valley Cities Requesting a Veto of a Bill To Change Single-Family Zoning


Becky Shevlin, a member of the Monrovia City Council and president of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, stated, "Senate Bill 9 will drive real estate speculators to purchase homes in order to split parcels, build duplexes on each lot." Governor Newsom has been urged to veto the bill by 27 San Gabriel Valley cities.

Mayors of 27 San Gabriel Valley cities signed a letter Friday urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to veto a bill that would allow lots zoned for single-family homes to have four units.

Senator Toni Atkins introduced SB 9, allowing subdivisions into two lots with each being able to house a two-unit building, thus allowing two duplexes on land originally allowed to have a single-family home. As Atkins has claimed, it would be a "gentle density increase for the neighborhood," but local governments, including the Los Angeles County. Council members oppose the bill.
